OBITUARY

(August 21, 1932 – October 4, 2009)

Devoted Wife, Mother and Grandmother

Ann McAlister McGowan Andrew, 77, of Washington and Melbourne, Florida, died Sunday, October 4, 2009, in Donnell House.

She was born August 21, 1932, in Monongahela, a daughter of the late J. Donald and Sophia Ludwig McAlister.

Mrs. Andrew attended grade school in Scenery Hill and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1950.

She worked for the United Way and PNC Bank. After leaving the bank in 1970, she worked as an executive secretary in the development office at Washington and Jefferson College, retiring in 1995 after 25 years of service. After her husband’s death in 1997, she was elected to fill his office as president of the Old Elizabeth Mutual Insurance Company.

Mrs. Andrew enjoyed cooking, gardening, spending winters in Florida, and volunteering at Neighbor Health Center in the Outpatient Department. She was a member of The Washington Hospital Auxiliary, life member of Pennsylvania Parent-Teacher Association and a former member of Washington Chapter 407 of the Order of Eastern Star.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a loving caregiver to her husbands and her daughter, Kathy.

Mrs. McGowan was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church and a former member of First Christian Church.

On October 18, 1950, in Scenery Hill, she married Robert L. McGowan, who died June 11, 1997.

On December 9, 2000, she married D. Reed Andrew, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Linda M. Brezinski and her husband, Mark M. Brezinski, of Washington, and Nancy M. Waddle and her husband, Dr. Keith A. Waddle, of Huntingdon; a sister, Marian M. Lancaster of Brighton, Michigan; six grandchildren, John Robert (Anita) Neal of Paradise, Texas, Jay D. (Kelly) Cowieson of Houston, Texas, Nicole W. (Michael) Magee of Smyrna, Georgia, Jill L. (Dr. Robert Jr.) Daniels of Washington, Sean A. Waddle (fiancée Christie Black) of Huntingdon and Matthew Brezinski of Washington; five great-grandchildren, Lauren and Brody Cowieson, Logan and Lexi Daniels and Lilly Magee; step great-grandchildren, Zane and Bridget Meyer of Paradise, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a daughter, Kathy McGowan-Neal; and two brothers, Donald L. McAlister and Paul D. McAlister.

Friends will be received Wednesday from 4 till 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 till 11 a.m., the hour of service, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, with Rev. Dr. Charles Perrine officiating. Burial will follow in Beallsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Washington and Jefferson Scholarship Fund, 60 South Lincoln Street, Washington, PA 15301; Donnell House, Hospice Care of the Washington Hospital, 155 Wilson Avenue, Washington, PA 15301; or to American Cancer Society, 331 South Main Street, Washington PA 15301.
