OBITUARY

 Helen L. Gillis, 89 of Scenery Hill, PA (Beallsville Borough) died Sunday, April 6, 2014 in her home.

            She was born May 18, 1924 in Vestaburg, PA a daughter of the late J. W. and Mildred Gillis Leeper.

            Mrs. Gillis was a 1942 graduate of East Bethlehem High School.

            For many years she was employed by the J & L Steel Corporation doing clerical work and later worked with her husband in the Gillis Insurance Agency and their York and Century 21 Realty Business as well as the family farm.

            She was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Fredericktown, PA, the National Pike Steam, Gas and Horse Association, a member of the former Deemston Grange and a member of the Professional Insurance Agents. She served as the Judge of Elections in Beallsville Borough.

            In addition to living and working on the family farm she particularly cherished the time she spent with and caring for her grandchildren.

            On October 9, 1947 she married Lindsey P. Gillis who survives.

            Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Jay Gillis of Beallsville, PA, Lee Gillis (Valerie) and Barry Gillis (Debbie Pierce) both of Deemston; three grandchildren, Amy Matthews (Jim), Jana Plevel (Pat) and Logan Gillis; five great grandchildren, Christian, Kaylee and Lindsay Richardson, Patrick and Mason Plevel; two step grandchildren, Craig and Justin Mayton; two step great grandchildren, Carter Adam and Austin Kendall Mayton and Mrs. Gillis was anxiously awaiting the arrival of Baby Matthews.

            Deceased in addition to her parents is a grandson Alan Jay Gillis; one brother, Walter Leeper and one sister, Eleanor Harris. Mrs. Gillis was the last of her immediate family.

 

Friends will be received Wednesday from 4 to 8 P.M. in the John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, PA where services will be held Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be in Beallsville Cemetery, Beallsville, PA. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the National Pike Steam, Gas and Horse Association, P.O. Box 181, Brownsville, PA 15417.
