Bio

Joseph Leander DeGood, son of Aaron Dalby DeGood and Elizabeth Ann Kennedy, was born on Sun. 29 Dec 1844 in Washington County, Pennsylvania.

At age 25, Joseph Leander DeGood married Mary E. Rose, daughter of David Rose and Marguret Hewitt, on Thu. 22 Sep 1870 at the at the residence of the bride's father, Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania. In an article in the Waynesburg Republican giving the marriage information, was the following: "Accompanying the above was a large and delicious cake, crowned with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and roses. Although the name Rosie is lost to her, yet we are certain that by 'any other name she will be just as sweet,' and as the years roll on, may fresh and blooming roses spring up around them to cheer them on their way through life." Two children were born to this marriage: Urso Camilla and Fred Lee.

The following article appeared in the Waynesburg Republican on 14 Jun 1871: Grand Festival and Entertainment at Jefferson, Greene County, PA., Tuesday, July 4th for the benefit of the M. E. Church. The entertainment to consist of addresses by able and eminent speakers. Dinner, and supper in the evening. Each lady who contributes a necktie made of the same kind of material of the dress worn by her on that evening, will be admitted free of charge to supper. Prizes to be awarded in the evening by vote. Committee: . . . , J. L. DeGood.

Joseph Leander DeGood lived between 1890 and 1891 in 717 3rd Avenue, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Joseph shows an occupation of music teacher at this address. J. L. DeGood received a United States Patent # 445,978 for a musical instrument on 10 Feb 1891 at age 46 years, 1 month and 12 days.

On Tuesday, 12 Jul 1898, the DeGood Orchestra of Detroit, consisting of eight pieces, furnished music for the Chautauqua of Lower Michigan on Orion Lake, Oxford, Oakland County, Michigan.

Joseph Leander DeGood died on Wed. 29 May 1918 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan at age 73 years and 5 months leaving Mary E. as a widow. He was buried on Fri. 31 May 1918 in Beallsville Cemetery, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
